Memories to keep

Ok, so yeah, I've not posted here in a year, but I wanted to jot down an event from this morning so that I wouldn't forget it. It's just one of those memories you want to keep forever.

I was brushing Allison's hair this morning before taking the kids to daycare. She must have gotten something in it yesterday because I couldn't get the brush through it. I was trying to be gentle, but it just wasn't working. Allison started crying.

Bobby, who had been sitting nearby watching all of this, jumped up and ran to her bed where he grabbed her "smelly blankie" and brought it to her. I thought it was so sweet that he tried to comfort her. And it worked! Allison calmed down, and though I still had to tug and pull to brush her hair out, she stopped crying so hard.

Way to go Bobby! My caring little man.

Home one year (almost) update

As he nears the one year at home mark, Robert Frank Estuardo Lord (formerly Marvin Estuardo) is happy and healthy. At his two year checkup in May 2008, he was 24.7 lbs. He's wearing sizes 18m to 2t.

He was evaluated by the county Infant and Toddler program in September 2007 and they found a 25% language delay (of course after only one month's exposure to English!) so he qualified for speech services. We've been receiving speech therapy once per month in our home. The therapist reports he's now right on target for his age though we plan to continue therapy until he ages out of the program at 3. He has about 50 words, including all family member's names, as well as words like nose, toes, shoes, sock, cup, ball, airplane, pool, banana, milk, drink and nite-nite. He is just starting to put words together. The sentence that takes my breath away is "I love you!" He runs up to me, wraps his arms around my legs and says it. The first time or two, I nearly cried.

He had a dental checkup in May 2008 and his teeth are all in and are healthy. The dentist is slightly concerned that they are so closely spaced and urged us to start flossing his teeth. That has been an adventure! We're still working on that.

He has been walking since September and now also runs, jumps, hops and climbs. He is still sleeping in a crib, but I expect that he will move to a toddler bed soon as I've caught him more than once with his foot hanging over the railing.

He loves to eat! We haven't yet found a food that he doesn't like. His favorite, without a doubt, is banana. He eats one every day. Grapes are a close second. He loves vegetables and will eat every bit of broccoli we give him. Last night at dinner he ate two ears of corn!

He's very healthy. He had one or two colds over the winter and is just getting over hand, foot and mouth disease. He sleeps well, going to bed about 8:30 and sleeping until 8:00 the next morning. Many nights, he does awake around 4:00am, but a pat on the back and a few soft words and he goes right back to sleep.

His favorite toys are cars. He likes to push them around. He also enjoys blocks, Legos and balls. He likes to color with crayons and can do four piece puzzles. He has a scooter that he likes to ride outside.

He loves people and has good social skills. He's very personable and likes to say hello to everyone he meets. When people stop to talk to him, he gets shy and hides behind me, then peeks out smiling. He goes to daycare every day and is excited to see his teacher and his friends each morning. He will be moving to a new daycare in a few weeks and we'll start going for visits soon so he can get used to it beforehand.

He adores both of his sisters and is very happy when Amanda is around to play with him. When Daddy gets home at night, Bobby gets so excited he squeals. Then he runs to the door yelling "Daddy, daddy, daddy" until Bob comes in and scoops him up for a hug. He follows Allison around and tries to get her to play with him. Most of the time, she's not really interested, but sometimes they chase each other around or play hide and seek. In the evenings before bed, he likes to sit on our laps and cuddle.

I never expected the transition to be as easy as it has. I read a lot, including some pretty scary stuff, so I was prepared for difficulties. Instead, Bobby fit right into our family from day 1. And as we near day 365, we can't imagine our lives without him.

Still here

I haven't forgotten this blog. We've just been so busy with everything else that it's kind of fallen to the wayside. I have kept up with photos and videos.

We're leaving on Monday (as long as the predicted Nor'easter doesn't strand us) to go to Florida to introduce Bobby to his grandparents. We're also, of course, going to sneak in a day at the Magic Kingdom. We even have reservations at one of the park hotels (All-star Movies) and a character breakfast. I am SO excited!!!!

Bobby is doing very well. He's happy and healthy. What more could we ask for?

Here's a video I shot last week of the typical put-to-bed routine we have. They bounce on their beds for a few minutes and then finally settle down.

Bobby at home

We're settling in well. Today makes one week that he's been home. There are definitely some settling in issues, but we're all getting quite used to one another now.

The first few days, while we were in Guatemala, he was very reserved and quiet. Hardly cried, hardly smiled. Just sort of watched everything. But over time, his personality has come out and he does smile more often now.

Developmentally, he's pretty far behind. He's 15.5 months and is still not walking nor talking. He really hasn't made any progress since we met him in January. He was fed pretty much exclusively milk via bottle (6 a day!), so we've had to teach him how to finger feed himself. We're now down to 2 bottles a day (before nap and before bed), but haven't been successful in getting him to drink from a sippy cup yet.

He's started making more sounds. He was totally silent at first, except form "Mmmmm" when he was eating. Yesterday in the car, he "sang". I was thrilled to death!

We're waiting on an evaluation from the county infants and toddlers program. This may qualify him for services, which I think he may need. They sent me a questionaire to fill out for a "typical" 14 month old, and unfortunately, he can't check off many milestones.

When we asked the foster family about what he liked, they always referred to tv shows. We've come to believe that he spent most days in front of the tv all day long. He does seem to go into a sort-of trance when it's on, so we've cut out almost all tv.

Physically, he's small (10% on the height chart, 15% on weight), but that's not a surprise. Guatemalans are much smaller than we are. I felt like an absolute giant there at 5'7". His physical was fine. Poor guy had to give six vials of blood, wear a baggie to catch a urine sample, and we've been collecting poop for stool samples all weekend.

Sleep issues are settling down. When we got him, he was staying up until 10:30 at night! We've got that moved back to 9:00 and it only takes about 10 minutes now to get him settled. In the beginning, it was taking hours. DH is the champ at getting him to sleep quickly.

He and Allison enjoy one another. She's a bit rough with him, but he doesn't mind. They're sharing a room and have both adapted well to that. DH also bathes them at the same time and Allison was quite upset the other night at bathing by herself when Bobby was cranky and didn't want to play in the tub.

All in all, it's going better than I expected. Getting used to having two children instead of one has been an eye-opening experience. Just getting everyone ready and out the door in the morning is an adventure. Allison is still attending daycare and Bobby and I are at home for the next four weeks until I return to work. He then will join Allison at her daycare.

The pick-up trip blog

I started a brand new blog for the trip. Last time we went to Guatemala, I had problems posting photos because of our webhost. So, the new blog is hosted by blogger and I hope to have none of those issues. More photos, less hassle!

So, if you're looking for photos from our pickup trip, go here: http://gogetbobby.blogspot.com/

Another weekend to survive

Ugh. Well, no pink for me yesterday, so there's no possibility of good news until Monday evening at the earliest. I used to look forward to weekends! Now I just want it to be Monday @ 3:45pm Guatemala time.

I did get an email confirmation from the embassy that they have my cable 37 and it's good through November for prints, so hopefully no worries there.

I want my baby!

Finally in the embassy

Our final documents were filed today. Now we sit. And wait. You'd think we'd be good at it by now.

I just can't get a break

It seems if there's a minor bump to be hit with this adoption, I've hit it. And they are minor, so I don't feel right complaining about it. But they're just mounting up!

I was waiting for PA back in January when the whole "increased scrutiny" thing started. I went into PGN just as the multiple kickouts for stupid stuff really got bad. I was waiting for my GCBC as the books were sent to be bound. Now, even getting the passport, a normal one day simple thing, has run into a snag. There are spelling errors that have to be corrected before I can be submitted for pink. I just can't believe it!

This is now my 8th week since being out. Nearly everyone that got out around the same time is long home. I'm seeing pinks for people that got out more than a month after me! And I still haven't been submitted yet. Arg!

Pity? Party of one?

Finally the GCBC

I have the birth certificate!!! What a beautiful piece of paper. I faxed it to Bob with the comment "The best fax you've ever gotten".

I'm still not sure if we've been submitted to the Embassy yet, but if not it will certainly be soon.

It won't be much longer!!!!

Venting

Arg!!! We are still waiting on our birth certificate. I can't flippin' believe it!

They were supposed to pick it up last Tuesday, but were told to come back this Tuesday (today). I don't know yet if they got it. If they did, we'll be submitted to the Embassy on Thursday or Monday. Pinks have been taking about a week. Then the appointment is nearly two weeks after that. So, we're looking into August now. :::sob:::

All of my "out buddies" are either currently in Guatemala picking up their kids or are already home. Tomorrow will be the start of the 7th week of this "four to six week" process.

I want him home! I washed all of his clothes over the weekend and was so certain that this was going to be the week we'd get pink. I'm so tired of explaining that this normally straight-forward and simple part of the process is taking so long. Bah!!!!

Still waiting

Still no news. The request for the birth certificate was made last Monday. I hope that means we'll get it this week and then be submitted for pink. I can't take the waiting. I'd love to just head down and wait it out.

We have not seen a photo of Bobby since the beginning of March. Four months!!!! I'm sure he's grown so big and changed so much.

Approved!

Our case was approved by the Family Court judge today!!!

Now, the lawyer has to get certified copies of the decree, draw up the Protocolo, have the birth mother sign it, get the new birth certificate, get a Guatemalan passport, and submit everything to the US Embassy to get a visa. Hopefully, this can all be accomplished in about six weeks.

Movement???

It appears some of the cases filed in family court are starting to be approved. I'm trying not to be overly optimistic as I know I'll just crash again in a few weeks.

Today, I mailed a check to the agency to cover Bobby's surgery. I'm so angry that this "urgent" procedure has now been waiting for three months. Absolutely ridiculous.

Possible hope?

I posted on adoption.com yesterday and found some other people that are in the same position I am. I don't feel so alone now and I'm even feeling a bit hopeful.

I heard from more than one person that the cases were only expected to take a week or two for a decision! Basically, the court is taking the place of PGN. The judge decides if PGN's previos were valid. If they aren't valid, the adoption is approved. If they are ruled valid, the attorney fixes the previos and the judge then approves the case. Everyone seems to think PGN is now out of the picture completely. Very interesting.

Status time

After our third kickout on 4/18, our lawyer decided to file our case in Family Court instead of putting us back into PGN. She felt PGN was playing games and causing unnecessary delays. It's not the usual process, so no one really knows for sure what's going to happen. I was told to figure about two months.

Our lawyer has been filing family court cases, based on the baby's age, every few days since the end of April. Our case was filed on my birthday, 5/3. I just found out that one of the cases she filed has already been approved. So, that could mean we'll see an approval in a few weeks, or it could mean nothing. We just don't know! We've gone from one arbitrary process to a different arbitrary process.

Our lawyer is also going on vacation next week so unless there's a huge surprise in the next few days, we won't hear anything else for a while.

On the medical side, we decided to go ahead with the circumcision, however the operation has still not been scheduled. Since it's not commonly done in Guatemala, I suppose they're looking for someone experienced. It will definitely not happen until after she returns from vacation.

On another note, we got an email from the foster mom on Bobby's first birthday last Friday. They were going to have a little celebration for him on Sunday. It was a huge surprise to get that email. We gave her our email address back in January but never heard anything. When we talked to her on the phone a few weeks ago, she apologized and said that email was too confusing for her. We told her not to worry about it.

So, that's the (lack of) news for now.

Happy 1st Birthday to my sweet baby boy

I can't wait to see you again .....

Our Florida Trip

To try to take our minds off the complete lack of progress and the total failure of communcation with our case, we decided to visit the in-laws for a week. Bob helped out a bit around the house and we managed to sneak in a day at the Magic Kingdom. Here are our trip photos.
